Hailed as ‘astonishing and luminous’, soprano April Fredrick loves words and stories and the way that they fire the imagination. She has collaborated widely across styles from folk music to baroque, contemporary and opera.  April studied in London and the USA and has premiered many works across the world.  For the AST, she will perform Benjamin Britten’s extraordinary song cycle, Les Illuminations. First performed in 1940, this masterpiece sets poems by Arthur Rimbaud, for soloist and stings. Les Illuminations is a wonderful and surreal musical journey, with virtuoso writing for both soloist and orchestra. By way of contrast, April will also perform Rachmaninov’s much-loved Vocalise.

Another highlight is the Symphony No 3 by Louise Farrenc (1804 – 1875). Farrenc was the only female professor of music appointed at the famous Paris Conservatoire in the nineteenth century. She was a great pianist and composer, mainly of symphonies and chamber pieces. Her music is sure to appeal to lovers of Schubert and Mendelssohn.
